Why Learn Languages Young?

|

The commitment to offer all Key Stage 2 pupils the opportunity to learn a foreign language by the end of the decade is at the heart of the DfES’ National Languages Strategy.

Using appropriate methodologies teaching languages to children can:

  • Open their eyes to another culture.
  • Lay the foundations for developing real fluency and   for learning other languages.
  • Help in other areas of the curriculum, e.g. literacy, and improve their listening skills.
  • Boost their confidence and encourage positive attitudes towards foreign language learning.
  • Give recognition to languages spoken by children whose mother tongue is not English.
  • Form a sound basis for further study at Key Stage 3 and beyond.

‘It’s good fun and gives me the confidence to speak up,’ Pupil.

‘Years 5 and 6 are amazing us all with their eagerness and ability,’ Headteacher.

‘It’s good to see all the children motivated, even the more difficult ones,’ Teacher.

‘My son has relished the opportunity to learn a language and practices regularly at home! I consider it to be of great value,’ Parent.
